The headline news from the British Basketball League this week is that the BBL and English Basketball have agreed a new five-year contract. The deal seals the BBL’s role as the men’s premier league and also accepts that EB has overall responsibility for the development of basketball in England. The two organisations will meet on a regular basis to discuss matters of policy and common interest. An agreement between the two organisations has been the case since the BBL began in 1987, so although not a lot has changed, it gives the league a bit of stability.

Other news in the league comes from the Birmingham Mail which suggests Birmingham Panthers may be about to re-locate to Telford:

After the Aston Events Centre was deemed not fit for purpose on the eve of the BBL season, Panthers had to scramble for an alternative venue. Telford stepped in with a solution and have grand plans to develop basketball as a key flagship of their sports village project. The switch to 35 miles away will be a major embarrassment to the club, the BBL and the city.

Birmingham have just returned to the league after a year out and after losing their first game 101-79 at Leicester Riders it is unclear what the coming few weeks have in store for them.

On the court it was a good week for Milton Keynes Lions who hit two three pointers in the last minute to secure a dramatic 94-90 win over the Worcester Wolves for their second win of the season on Friday. Anthony Paez scored 31 points for the Wolves and was unlucky to be on the losing team.

On Sunday Julius Joseph led all scorers with 23 as the Scottish Rocks got their first win of the season over a dismal Chester Jets. The Jets have not won a game in their first three games and the final score of 102-64 suggests they may be waiting a while for a first win. Sunday’s other game saw Guildford Heat beat Plymouth Raiders in a re-match of the Cup Winners’ Cup. Carlton Aaron led the scoring with 21 points as the Heat won 78-75 and amazingly the game was scoreless in the last 92 seconds.

Former Brighton Bear Steve Parillon scored 23 to help Sheffield Sharks to their third victory in three games on Saturday. Their 69-67 victory over the Riders was thanks to a hook in the dying seconds of the game from Shelby Chaney.

This week’s other results included the Raiders’ 85-79 win against the Wolves and Newcastle Eagles’ 107-84 win over London Capital.
