Somewhere, someplace, Rashard Lewis is chuckling tohimself. His contract with Orlando, worth $118 million
over 6 years, averages out at $19.7 million per year -
one of the highest in NBA history. That’s more than
Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, or Kevin
Garnett.
That’s a maximum contract for a one dimensional
gunner, a nine year veteran with just 16 games of
playoff experience under his belt, a one time
All-Star, a guy who has never made an All NBA third
team.
So, in the spirit of exorbitance, here’s our top 5
worst free agent signings to date. Rashard could well
be a lock for the list in a few years time. I’m sure
he’ll still be chuckling though.
1. Jim McIlvaine - Can you blame Shawn Kemp for
hitting the burgers and the bottle after this one?
McIlvaine’s 7-year, $33.6 million contract blew apart
a Sonics team that was perennially challenging for the
chip.
2. Jon Koncak - The Kak attack really lived up to the
name. While ‘Jon Contract’s’ 6-year, $13 million deal
doesn’t sound like much today, at the time (1989) it
paid him more than Jordan, Magic or Bird.
3. Travis Knight - I remember watching Knight with the
Lakers; hustling down rebounds, finishing strong,
sacrificing his pasty body. He then signed a 7-year,
$22 million dollar deal with the Celts, grew his hair
long, and we never heard from him again.
4. Ben Wallace - Big Ben’s 4-year, $60 million max
deal with the Bulls was incredible. Don’t get me
wrong, he’s a solid defender and a beast on the boards
when he wants to be, but $60 million!? That’s a lot of
beans for a blue collar player that can’t score and
can’t be left in the game at crunch time.
5. Howard Eisley - 7 years, $41 million with the
Knicks. When he was playing behind Stockton people
thought he could start for a lot of teams. Turns out
he couldn’t.
