A new team, the start of the college season and Bill Walton are three more reasons to be counting down the days to October 28.
Reason no. 14: Welcoming the Thunder
I’ve already written about the thrill a sport geek gets when a team turns out in a new uniform and that thrill is intensified when it is a new team in a new uniform. Despite a lot of reasons to hate the NBA’s newest franchise (they cost us the Sonics), I am still really looking forward to watching them play this season.
As well as a developing future All Star (Kevin Durrant) and an improving Jeff Green, we’ll also get to see a new team and a new kit in a new arena with new commentators.
If that isn’t enough, there is Russell Westbrook. Again I have discussed the appeal of watching rookies and Westbrook is maybe the rookie that excites me most. He should get a lot of playing time in OKC and his up-tempo, athletic game seems suited to the NBA.
These combined factors make Thunder games very appealing, even if they do lose more than they win.
Reason no. 13: Stephen Curry
So far every single reason has been directly related to the start of the NBA season. Reason number 13 is slightly less direct. The theory behind it is the sooner the NBA season starts the closer the college basketball season gets and I can’t wait for that either.
Last year, in a thrilling March Madness, Stephen Curry was the star of the show but the 6ft shooting guard decided not to make the jump to the NBA this summer.
Now we get to see the Davidson youngster torch college defences for another year, which will be awesome. The college season in general is exciting with North Carolina looking very strong. So bring on the NBA season, so we can get started with some Dick Vitale and some “are you kidding me”.
Reason no. 12: Bill Walton
What Dick Vitale adds to a game with his enthusiasm, Bill Walton adds with his unique hyperbole.
Maybe the best example of this is the following paragraph:-
“Robert Sarver…the vision to somehow acquire Boris Diaw. And when you look at Boris Diaw and what he has done to this franchise..it's changed everything. As we celebrate his brilliance, and when you talk to Boris Diaw..what a classical human being he is. It was 201 years ago today, that Beethoven's Symphony #3 in E Flat which [escorted] in the Age of Romanticism in music. And when I look at Boris Diaw, I think of Beethoven and the Age of the Romantics. This guy, has got it all.”As well as contributing in-game Bill is not afraid to do something different off the court and that is what makes him such easy listening.
